For Android app developers that have been slow to adopt Google’s push for themed app icons, there’s no longer a choice.

Developers must now agree to let their Android app icons be themed or they won't be allowed to distribute on the Google Play Store.

Google released Android 13 in H2 2022. Among other changes, it shipped with themed app icons support, allowing apps to change their color to match the phone's wallpaper for a more consistent look.

Android 16 QPR2 will bring forced themes to apps that don't support Material You, and Google isn't letting any app developer opt out.
