By the 1980s, fewer than 50 Hawaiians under age 18 could speak their language. A handful of second-language speakers took it upon themselves to start a school where everything is taught in Hawaiian.

But when physicians don’t speak the same language as their patients, communication challenges can worsen the situation.

Speaking a second or even a third language can bring obvious advantages, but occasionally the words, grammar and even accents can get mixed up.
