GitHub has launched a preview of GitHub Copilot, an AI-based coding assistant for Visual Studio Code that suggests lines of code or functions as you type.

On the eve of its GitHub Universe conference starting today, the company said that the AI is now helping to write 30% of code on the platform.

“AI is a key boost to developer velocity and the first results from GitHub’s Copilot are very encouraging, with more than one third of developer’s code generated,” Mueller said.

But this is new, uncharted territory. If nothing else, GitHub is leading a brazen experiment that could pave the way for a wider range of AI-powered professional assistants.
